Most of the equipment used here is fabricated locally from waste, with minimal to nil usage of diesel. In addition, since the fuel cannot be discarded under pollution norms, it is reused to wash parts of vehicles. The entire procedure is conducted in-house. Such small initiatives make a major difference for the organization, its people, and the environment. In addition, these initiatives are major drivers of cost reduction, thereby adding to the company’s profitability.</p>
<p>Optimum use of scrap and recycled products to make tools required for servicing or manufacturing vehicles are another focus area. Not only are they sustainable, but also cost-saving. For example, at one of our company-owned dealerships in Chennai, a kingpin bush removal tool was fabricated and integrated with a lift axle bush tool. The innovation has shortened the time and made things much easier. The overall impact is a move towards improvement, and this is how Kaizen makes an impact.</p>

<p>It was 5th October when my alarm was given the responsibility to wake me up after a long period. "Wake up my boy! It’s your first day at the office!", my father tousled up my hair and grinned. You might use the same strainer multiple times, but beyond 2-3 pours, its pores get clogged and need to be cleaned thoroughly so that it can perform its function again.</p>
<p>Similarly, any filter used in your <a href="https://www.eichertrucksandbuses.com/light-medium-duty-trucks">BSVI truck</a> needs to be regularly cleaned, regardless of what it is designed to trap, so that it can continue to perform its function effectively.</p>
<p>Since DPF is also a filter, it has a finite capacity to store soot. And when this accumulation goes beyond a limit, it <a href="https://otrperformance.com/blogs/quick-tips/what-happens-if-your-truck-can-no-longer-regen?srsltid=AfmBOoqzXkYynibyOJHRuRG6f6A1ii0ZzoVDob1LvZeV9wXmNoT2DJZS" target="_blank">can start interfering with the flow of exhaust gases</a>. This can lead to higher exhaust back pressure, which will cause a risk of unnecessary wear on your vehicle’s engine.</p>
<p>It will also impact the emission levels. Hence, the DPF filter needs regular maintenance and is cleaned through a process called <strong>DPF Regeneration</strong>.</p>
<p>During DPF regeneration in progress, the soot is burned away with high temperature in the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). Regeneration is normally performed automatically while driving, but in certain driving conditions where the required temperature cannot be achieved, it has to be initiated manually.</p>
<h2>Automatic DPF Regeneration</h2>

<p>The automatic DPF regeneration process happens during driving when the load on the engine is high enough to reach a sufficiently high temperature. Diesel trucks covering longer distances on highways at high speeds and sufficient load and those on a heavy duty cycle, for example climbing a lot of hills, should have no problem in regenerating their DPF automatically.</p>
<p>When you drive continuously for several hours at low engine load or continuously run at idling speed or frequently start or stop due to traffic congestion or cover short trips in the city frequently, regeneration is not initiated automatically. It may be necessary for you to start regeneration manually in these cases.</p>

<h2>Manual DPF Regeneration</h2>
<p>There’s no such thing as a good time for downtime, especially when it is unexpected. Therefore, one issue the fleet owners and their drivers should know and plan for with BSVI vehicles is the Parked Regeneration or Manual DPF Regeneration process.</p>
<p>A warning light on the cluster will alert the driver about the DPF level in truck and if the filter is blocked. Accordingly, the <a href="https://www.foxwelldiag.com/blogs/car-diagnostic/manually-start-dpf?srsltid=AfmBOop2f4KqBm8yC7qYrHYvxxwU_YAEng0xLPXobcvnOblmqedFRKUz" target="_blank">regeneration needs to be activated manually</a>, which can be started by parking the vehicle in a hazard-free zone with all safety precautions and instructions.</p>

DPF Regeneration: What Does It Mean For Trucks?

<p>India is well on its way to become a major manufacturer of automobile <a href="https://www.eichertrucksandbuses.com" target="_blank">Eicher vehicles</a> as its production increased from 2,53,30,967 units in 2016 to about 3,09,15,420 units in 2018-19, a 22% increase. Despite being the fastest growing economy, the country has reached an alarming stage with most of its cities counted amongst having poorest air quality worldwide. <p>Undertaking this upgrade as a fierce challenge, manufacturers had only 3 years to reconfigure their vehicles with BSVI compliant engines, or transform their existing vehicles with BSVI powertrains. To put this change in perspective, the upgrade from Euro 4 to Euro 6 norms in Europe was gradual over a span of 10 years. This is where we channeled our expertise in supplying base engines for the Euro 6 requirements of Volvo Group to become the first CV player to unveil a BSVI engine as early as June, 2019. Another area where expertise was especially advantageous to Eicher was in delivering a reliable BSVI solution for drastically reducing emissions as per norms. While BSVI-compliant petrol vehicles are required to reduce Carbon Monoxide (CO) by 20% and Hydrocarbons (HC) by 8.4%, BSVI-compliant diesel vehicles need to minimize three pollutants, including Hydrocarbons (HC), Particulate Matter (PM) and Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) by 86%, 50% and 88% respectively. To enable this, BSVI <a href="https://www.eichertrucksandbuses.com/" target="_blank">trucks</a> will come fitted with an Exhaust After-Treatment System (EATS) which we intend to familiarise you with!</p>
<h4>What is Exhaust After-Treatment System (EATS) ?</h4>
<p>Since the permissible levels of pollutants are very low, Exhaust After-Treatment System (EATS) is an elaborate chamber that will treat and control pollutants like NOx, CO, HC and PM sequentially through different chemical processes.</p>

<h4>DOC &amp; DPF - A combination made for victory!</h4>
<p>The <strong>Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) </strong> is a fine honeycomb ceramic structure and owes its name to its ability to oxidise exhaust gases. <strong>CO and HC pass through this filter and become less harmful with an efficiency of upto 99% ! </strong></p>

<p><strong>Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is a modern technology that works in sync with DOC to convert PM into soot. </strong> Due to continuous trapping of soot, the DPF filter gets blocked overtime leading to higher fuel consumption and unnecessary wear on the engine. To ensure proper working of the DPF, it needs to be cleaned regularly through a process called <strong>Regeneration. </strong> It is the removal of soot particles by burning them away into ash. Since ash cannot be burned up and keeps accumulating in the DPF, regular servicing is necessary to prevent the filter from choking completely lest it will need replacement - which is costly, so stick to your maintenance schedules, always!</p>
<h4>SCR &amp; ASC – Closing the Loop</h4>
<p>The harmful oxides of nitrogen (NOx) are still left to be processed. This is where <strong>Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR), </strong> one of the most cost-effective and fuel-efficient technologies available comes to the rescue. The chemical reaction is known as ‘reduction’ because <strong>Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), </strong>a highly purified mixture of urea and deionized water comes into play by reducing NOx into harmless nitrogen and water, which are then released through the vehicle’s tailpipe. <strong>Ammonia Slip Catalyst (ASC) </strong> helps to adsorb the excess urea in the SCR as it is harmful to the environment.</p>

<p>EATS can reduce NOx emissions up to 90% while simultaneously reducing HC and CO emissions by 50-90%, and PM emissions by 30-50%.</p>

<p>In 2015, the Supreme Court of India temporarily banned the sale of large diesel cars with an engine capacity of 2000cc or more to combat the capital's infamous toxic smog. Diesel engines had earned a reputation of being associated with the growing levels of pollution. Fast forward to 5 years later, in 2020, the pollution is alarming and has been increasing exponentially with every year that passes. Back in 2010, the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) mandated the use of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) in all diesel vehicles. However, SCR is not something new, in fact it has been around for nearly half a century! However, there is a fluid that is going to be increasingly commonplace with the advent of BSVI emission norms - <b>Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)</b>. DEF is going to work as a catalyst with <b>Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)</b> towards improving the overall health of the environment and making diesel vehicles more <b>#Greensponsible</b> for the future.</p>
<h4>DEF - A Necessity in BSVI</h4>
<p>All <a href="https://www.eichertrucksandbuses.com/" target="_blank"><b>commercial vehicle</b></a> manufacturers are striving towards re-configuring their engines to meet the stringent emission control requirements that will be implemented from April, 2020. The major challenge is the tightening of NOx emission limits for vehicles running on diesel, which is one of the major contributors to the rising impurities in the air.<b> In BSVI, there is going to be an 89% reduction in NOx emissions as compared to BSIV</b></p>

EATS is an ancillary component in diesel-powered BSVI vehicles. Unlike in BSIV, all the diesel trucks and buses in BSVI will have SCR and therefore the need for DEF, which also goes by the name <b>AdBlue or Urea</b> as a layman would call it. Although the fluid is known by different names across the globe, they have similar composition and certification.</p>
<h4>Decoding DEF</h4>
<p>Since Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is going to be as important as the fuel (diesel) itself in a BSVI vehicle, it is paramount that we know how the use of DEF will impact the performance. Let us explain a few basics about DEF that may pop up in your minds -</p>

<li><b>What exactly is DEF?</b> <br>It is a colourless liquid made with a combination of deionized water (67.5%) and a very pure form of urea (32.5%). </li>
<li><b>Is DEF a fuel or an additive?</b> <br>It is neither a fuel nor a fuel additive and has a separate tank in the vehicle. There is a certain level of DEF that has to be maintained in the tank otherwise the vehicle’s performance may be affected adversely and eventually lead to a breakdown.</li>

<li><b>Should I use AdBlue or DEF?</b> <br>Since both are same in composition and certification, both can be used.</li>
<li><b>Can I make DEF at home?</b> <br>DEF is manufactured with precise proportion of the purest form of urea and any alterations to the proportions can cause damage to your SCR engine. It is hence, not recommended to make DEF at home. Here’s an interesting fact about how sensitive this solution can be to additives -  One spoon of salt can spoil 20,000 Liters of DEF! SCR systems are susceptible to potential chemical impurities in Diesel Exhaust Fluid, hence it is extremely important to maintain high standards of DEF quality along with ISO standard 22241 in order to ensure superior fluid quality.</li></ul>
